Colour
Hue
Hue refers to the colours of the visual spectrum - red, orange, yellow, blue, indigo and violet.
Black, white, and grey are not hues.
Value
Value refers to the lightness/darkness of a colour.
No colour has a lower value than black or a higher value than white.
You can change just the Value of a Colour by adding black, white or grey.
Tint
When a hue is blended with white (i.e. value is lowered) it is referred to as a tint.
Tone
When a hue is blended with grey it is referred to as a tone.
Shade
When a hue is blended with black (i.e. value is increased) it is referred to as a shade.
Chroma
Chroma refers to the purity of a colour.
Mixing a pure hue with black, white, grey or any other colour reduces its purity and lowers its chroma.
Intensity and saturation are more common terms that mean a similar thing.
RGB
RGB refers to the primary colours of light, Red, Green and Blue.Â
Note how these are different to the reflected primary colours, Red, Yellow and Blue. Adding full intensity Red, Green and Blue light together makes white light. Conversely, adding pure Red, Yellow and Blue paint together makes black paint.Bibliography
