SS Cell Manipulation
Row Manipulation
Add Row
Excel
Excel can only add a new row above the current row. This can be difficult if you need to add a row above a row with a small height using the mouse (I often use rows with a small height to ensure functions like SUM continue to work when I add a row to the bottom of the area to be SUMmed without needing to manually extend the selection i.e. I make the original selection include the blank row with the small height). Use the keyboard shortcuts below to get around this.Using the mouse...
Click the row number to select the whole row.
Right-Click then select Insert to add a row above the selected row.
Using the keyboard...
Shift+Space (to select the whole row of the cell you are in).
Ctrl+Shift+= (or Ctrl++) (to add a row above the selected row).
Delete Row
Excel
Using the mouse...
Click the row number to select the entire row.
Right-Click then select Delete to delete the selected row.
Using the keyboard...
Shift+Space (to select the entire row of the cell you are in).
Ctrl+-) (to delete the selected row).
Move Row
Excel
Using the mouse...
Click the row number to select the entire row.
Hover near the bottom of the selected row until the cursor changes to a +
Hold down Shift and drag row to target location
Column Manipulation
Add Column
Excel
Excel can only add a new column to the left of the current row. This can be difficult if you need to add a new column to the right of a column with a narrow width using the mouse (I often use columns with a narrow width to ensure functions like SUM continue to work when I add a column to the far right or left of the area to be SUMmed without needing to manually extend the selection i.e. I make the original selection include the blank column with the narrow width). Use the keyboard shortcuts below to get around this.Using the mouse...
Click the column letter to select the entire column.
Right-Click then select Insert to add a column left of the selected row.
Using the keyboard...
Ctrl+Space (to select the entire column of the cell you are in).
Ctrl+Shift+= (or Ctrl++) (to add a column left of the selected row).
