Oracle Background Processes

The Oracle Background processes are identifiable by the PNAME column from v$process. It is possible for these background processes to become orphaned (i.e. they may appear in the Orphan OS Processes query above). Before killing the process it's useful to have some understanding of what the process is for and what the implications might be if you accidentally kill an active process....
